Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width - Fabric in the 16th Century

Fri, 20/04/2018 - 16:00 to 17:00

The 16th century really only has 3 main fibres* but it had a huge number of different weaves and these all created really different fabrics. We’ll use this session to talk about and feel different types of fabrics and how they were most commonly used. As far as possible I’ll have samples of the different types of fabrics that we’ll discuss. Amongst other samples come and feel what a satin weave is like in silk, wool and linen. We’ll also cross-compare against some of the modern alternatives and do some fibre testing.

*You can throw cotton in there as well but it’s not very widely used and there’s a lot of dispute around it.
