From Sydney:

Public Transport
The nearest train station is Mittagong (on the Southern Highlands Line). To get there from:
  • Sydney Domestic or International Airport: Catch a Macarthur service (T8) from Platform 2 to Campbelltown. Change at Campbelltown for the Southern Highlands Line (Platform 4)
  • Central Station: Catch a T8 Macarthur service from Platform 22 or 23. Change at Campbelltown for the Southern Highlands line (Platform 4)

Fares

Sydney public transport uses the Opal system for fares. You can get Opal cards and load them with value (instructions below), some stations have single trip tickets available (NOTE: MITTAGONG STATION DOES NOT SELL SINGLE TRIP TICKETS), or you can use a contactless-enabled (“Tap and Go”) debit or credit card (one card per fare, you still have to tap on and tap off at either end of your journey for the correct fare to be deducted).

Opal cards are available at retail outlets in NSW, from the kiosk at the airport and at Central Station. They are also available online at https://www.opal.com.au/   Concession and child cards are also available online.

Unlike similar schemes across Australia, the Opal card itself has no cost – if you buy a card for $20, it has $20 of available “credit” to use.

Be aware, the Station Access Fee from Domestic and International does result in higher fares. The Fare Calculator and Trip Planner by Sydney Trains will help you avoid a shock.
